Missing You
He must have just thought of his departure, of leaving his home town and she instantly knew what was in his mind. She started feeling the tension pulling them apart,he was trying to break free to a new world that would leave her world barren, the imaginary strings she always thought had held them together were breaking like they were nothing but the feeblest, thinnest threads ever. She started having a feeling of him going far away soon..
Strangely they hardly communicated, directly and verbally. Not ever. Almost. But somehow she always knew what he felt or she was just good at guessing and was never wrong about him. Did he feel exactly the same? She wasn't sure... But she saw him being upset when she was not around and letting the steam off the next day by being impossible to all those who interacted with him and she assumed that it must be because he wanted to see her but for a day she bailed out on him... That was their entire relation. Assuming and predicting...
It was clear that she was living in a fantasy world that would collapse with just one glimpse of reality. His heart wasn't for her or it was but he was not yet ready to give it away that easily. He was not ready to share himself with her, to be someone's possession... He wanted to try her and test her so that he made sure she was as she appeared. Very rare, very real and very ravishing...
The moment he saw her he knew he would long for her, he would want to befriend her and make her a complete part of his life and cling to her forever and never let her go. But he had different ways. He instantly acted to appear to be repelled from her just to give her a chance to this world and all the opportunities she could explore.. But little did he know that she wasn't the kind to take up every chance without weighing it, without being sure that it was worth it and well suited her. She was aware of herself and this society and she dared not let any dirt spoil her image and that was what made her standout among all the women he ever met and befriended... Once or twice she'd talked to him just something related to their work and she spoke to him in way she did with no other, like she was searching herself for finest words to communicate with him and he felt that. He felt her hesitation though she was very hard on herself to appear "her usual self" but he felt it and that made him melt and while answering her query his voice settled to a gentle tone, a kind of politeness he wasn't known to have at work.
Every morning he was used to seeing her face either thoughtfully looking at her notebook, or scanning through the pile of paper or very genuinely speaking to her colleagues. Almost all the people would always have some important mater they wanted to discus with her first thing in the morning and he never understood why. May be she was a good listener or may be talking to her comforted people in the same way looking at her comforted him. But he'd denied it usually and try to skip the thought of her being important to him. He had his nature, he kept the idea of her being important to him far apart for sometime till he realized it himself sometime later that he was used to her presence even in her absence. He would drift into her thoughts, the details of her face, her love for accessories... he was amazed at himself knowing he had notices even tiniest details about her personality. He noticed a million little things about her. He even knew she loved rings the most and imagined a priceless collection in her possessions safe in drawers.
They both were so alike in so many ways and a perfect contrast in many other ways. Everyone noticed that and secretly prayed they would notice it too. Apart from their personalities their souls were lit with the same spark, they were radiant and both had a fire in them that was marvelous!
The day came when he finally left the office. He expanded his business and went over seas just as she suspected and without saying a single word! She was miserable for days but she wasn't allowing her feelings gain on her and so she appeared well composed even when she was dying from the inside. Her job had nothing to it, she realized it in sixteenth month of joining, after he left. Before she was too busy in noticing him that she hardly noticed the details of her new job. Attachments of this kind are constructive and destructive both... She had the effect of both. She was destroying herself daily living in his afterglow and trying to construct the career she always dreamed of and in that she was succeeding with a tortoise speed.
Initially he was too busy abroad in laying the foundations of his business but after six months when things started to run smoothly and as per his expectations and he had time to relax and once again she started being his wanderwall. Oh God knows how badly he missed her! He would open his twitter account see her last tweet and would log out. No change since he left... Her last tweet was just something weird. She was used to sharing song lyrics or her favorite lines from famous writers and quotes. Her last tweet was two days before he left. It said;
"But the pleasure isn't owning the person. The pleasure is this. Having another contender in the room with you." Philip Roth ... I long!
He was confused... She was miserable. He was desperate... she was longing. And they both had this wall between them allowing their egos to make them suffer in silence and never letting the other person aware of the feelings. It was torture. They were putting themselves through it, there wasn't anyone to blame.
Till at last... an year later on the date he left, she tweeted:
"You are being missed. A little too often, a little too much."
He read it and something inside him triggered and he felt his heart swelling up! He favorited her tweet, retweeted it, followed her on twitter.. And dialed her number! She had his number saved since he'd left. She found it on his new business card placed on her colleagues desk so she memorized it and later saved it.. Each day she prayed he'd call but he didn't until that day. She was looking out through the window with her heart aching, her phone rang. She heard the bell twice and ignored. When it rang the third time she lazily stood up from the window seat and moved towards the desk where her phone rang and vibrated. She was startled at his name appearing on the phone and she picked on fourth ring and heard his deep voice. Same as before, very gentle for her and he whispered on phone:
"A little too often, a little too much!!"
